Last Day To Submit Your Favorite Public Artwork for Contest on OnlyinPGH

No time for a fancy post--Only In PGH is hosting a cool online contest to choose Pittsburgh's favorite public art. MR Rogers? Roberto Clemente? Willie Stargell? The gangsa pigeon on Whole Foods? The downtown Magnolia tree? Jenny Holzer's Convention Center tribute to August Wilson? The Katz Plaza Eye Benches? The Octopus Garden in Friendship?

"To enter the contest, send a picture to submit@onlyinpgh.com and include your name, specific location where the photo was taken and a caption describing why the subject of the photo is your favorite piece of public art in Pittsburgh. One entry per person.

The prize this time around? A Pittsburgh art package that includes two tickets to the upcoming Gift to America: A Celebration of the Creation of the Millvale Murals by Maxo Vanka show, a “Faces of Vanka” poster and an onlyinpgh t-shirt! Update: It's Official, Deitch Projects Will Close

I suppose it's sort of self evident, but Jeffrey's appointment to head LA Moca will result in the closure of his gallery. As of June, this important innovative space which played a big role in the contemporary and street art community will be closed for good.

Not to insult Jeffrey on any level, but one has to wonder if he would have done this in a stronger and less freaked out and conservative art market. A most elegant way to bail and yet live on as a power player.

Transformazium co-founder, and street art creative genius, Swoon as well as CMU alum, Jonathan Borofsky both showed at Deitch.

Heather Pesanti Becomes Head Of Buffalo's Albright Knox Gallery

People relying on this blog for up to date info on everything should realise that this is a small operation and lots of things fall through the cracks.

"Heather Pesanti, Carnegie Museum of Art assistant curator of contemporary art, will leave the museum in October to become curator at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, N.Y., a museum known for its fine collection of modern and contemporary art.

Pesanti joined the Carnegie in 2005 to assist with "Life on Mars," the 2008 Carnegie International, curated by Douglas Fogle, Carnegie curator of contemporary art. She curated "Forum 58: Jonathan Borofsky -- Human Structures" and "Forum 60: Rivane Neuenschwander" at the Carnegie."

The revolving door at the Carnegie has likely just begun to spin. I wonder if Heather might help build alliances between The Albright Knox and the Carnegie. I would imagine both institutions have similar issues in terms of having strong collections and large facilities that reflect their once wealthy heritage.

Heather was the primary Carnegie curator that did studio visits with local artists and played an active role in curating local shows like a Gestures show at the Matress Factory and the recent show at Unsmoke in Braddock.

Jonathan Borofsky @ Deitch Projects

Here are some images I took of the Jonathan Borofsky show at Deitch Projects in Soho. Borofsky is another CMU alum. I think I said that I saw a lot of great shows but this one was one of the few that seemed on another level. Let's just leave it at that until I am able to get my thoughts together.
