Another Great Show closing this week: Salon Show 2013 @ Gallery 4 in Shadyside

I actually haven't seen this show yet. Gallery Four has a clear aesthetic, tending towards highly skilled "hipster", street art, but within that range, many of the shows are pretty amazing.

This is their first Salon type show.

"The Gallery 4 has entered it's 3rd year of business and we are so pleased to have been able to work with so many talented artists. In keeping with this tradition, The Gallery 4 has hosted a salon style competition to search for up and coming artists. Artists whose pieces reflect the gallery's particular aesthetic were selected to take part in a juried group exhibition. Artists will then be appointed and presented with the opportunity to hold their own exhibition at The Gallery 4. Selection was determined at the The Gallery4 's discretion and dependent on skill level, design sense, originality, polish, and personal taste. After reviewing hundreds of works from talented artists (both local and afar) skilled in a broad spectrum of disciplines, The Gallery 4 is proud to exhibit these pieces in a unique exposition which celebrates our 3rd Anniversary. The Gallery 4 presents The 2013 Salon Show."

You may recognize a lot of the artists, like   Richard Claraval, Ryder Henry & Lauren Toohey. Gallery Four regulars like Brian Holderman also contributed works.

You likely have seen work by these artists around. Holderman did a big Downtown mural and Three Rivers Arts Festival Poster; Holbrook's murals are all over East Liberty and many other places in and near Pittsburgh.

Still, these murals are pretty great examples of their work. Brian is all about, highly designed and skillful hipster style--but this work is also extremely imaginative. One of his best works.

Kyle, who works with local kids and community members on his projects, throws the book at the walls, filling them with cultural and historical images. This is just a small taste of some of his murals which fill the area around the Bus way in Wilkinsburg.

•The winning artwork will creatively represent Three Rivers Arts Festival's mission to connect the community to the arts.

•Artwork must measure 11 inches wide by 14 inches tall.

•Artwork must prominently incorporate the Three Rivers Arts Festival logo. The logo can be recreated or stylized to match your artwork but must be recognizable and prominent. Click here to download the Festival logo.

•Do not include the Festival dates, locations, website, or phone number in the artwork. This information will be added by the Festival outside the dimensions of the artwork.

•Posters will be printed in full color

And there are other prizes/ awards including a student prize.

- Grand Prize Winner: The grand prize winner will be selected by the Festival's Visual Art Committee. The winning artist will receive a cash prize from the Festival in the amount of $300, a featured blog post on the Festival's website at artsfestival.net, a Three Rivers Arts Festival t-shirt, and 10 printed copies of his/her poster.

- People's Choice: All poster designs will be posted on pghgrassroots.com for a public vote. The People's Choice winner will receive a cash prize from the Festival in the amount of $100, an invitation to the Festival's opening reception, a Three Rivers Arts Festival t-shirt, and 5 printed copies of his/her poster.

- Student Prize: The Festival Visual Art Committee will select a winner from entries from high school students. The Student Winner will receive a cash prize from the Festival in the amount of $100, an invitation to the Festival's opening reception, a Three Rivers Arts Festival t-shirt, and 5 printed copies of his/her poster.

- Staff Favorite: The staff of Three Rivers Arts Festival will choose their favorite artwork from among all entries. The Staff Favorite winner will receive a cash prize from the Festival in the amount of $100, an invitation to the Festival's opening reception, a Three Rivers Arts Festival t-shirt, and 5 printed copies of his/her poster.

Pittsburgh Weekend Art Events: 7/24-25/09.

We're really smack-dab in the middle of Summer now. Embrace the opportunity to get out and about while the gettin's good. Here are a few ideas for your weekend plans...

Friday:

Take a trip to Fun Land: The Art of Pinball! The Warhol Museum is hosting a reception (7-10PM, free admission) for the launch of two pinball machines designed and created by local artists Mike Budai and Brian Holderman. The shindig is sponsored by art-collective Unicorn Mountain and the Professional Amateur Pinball Association (PAPA). I've seen these functional art pieces in promo shots, and I'm confident that they'll be absolutely stunning in person. You may have to wait in line a long time to play them, but there will also be twelve more vintage games to stick your quarters in. See what the kids of today are missing.

Guest curator Katherine Talcott has put together the 13th Gestures Show over at the Mattress Factory (1414 Monterey St., 7:30-9:30, $10). Included within is John Riegert's Sublet, a "gallery-within-a-gallery". These exhibitions are always worth seeing, if only to have a look at the individual aesthetic of a single art-world personality. I've seen some I've liked better than others, but they are invariably interesting (and very crowded... so get there early if you want to take some time with the work).

And if you have the time to stroll by Future Tenant starting on Friday, you can see a window installation called Planet Dragulon! by Scott Andrew and Michael McParlane. If you want to know what it's all about, there will be an artist Q & A from 9-10PM.

Saturday

All you really need to know is that Slim Cessna's Auto Club is playing at the 31st St Pub. Although Cessna himself has called the 'Burgh his home for more than five years, the rest of the band lives in Denver, and so their appearances in town are limited to 1-2 events annually. If you haven't yet had the honor to attend a performance of this Tent Revivalist stream of energy, spirit, and sound- by all means show up around 10PM and prepared to be altered forever. You may not get the chance to be told again.
