Glenwood Neighbors Beautification Project!

The Youngstown Playhouse is pleased to announce an upcoming mural project in the Glenwood Avenue area on the Southside of Youngstown!

PROJECT DETAILS

The project is an effort to beautify the Playhouse Grounds and surrounding environs through a highly collaborative mural art display. Debris and brush will be removed and a mural painted by community residents and institutional partners on a large and highly visible wall adjacent to playhouse grounds. This project ties into greater efforts to beautify and improve the Glenwood corridor and to strengthen community partnerships between non-profits and neighborhood residents.

April - May - Design

June -July - Mural Installation

· Cover letter, stating your interest in the project, as well as how you
would approach the project if you were selected

This is a group show where artists are invited to enter up to 3 pieces of found/collected or constructed/created art or artifacts related to Pittsburgh. All forms of media are acceptable, including audio, video, posters, prints, paintings, drawings, installations, state of the art technology, or artifacts. All art or artifacts must be accompanied by a biography of the artist/collector, and an Artist Statement of how the submission(s) relates to the above theme. All documents may be edited as deemed appropriate or necessary by the curator. PLEASE note we would like a unique perspective of Pittsburgh, with a limited number of the beautiful, but often seen, downtown skylines. WE would like to include pieces that contribute to the flavor of Pittsburgh’s diversity, including its history and neighborhoods. Also note Pittsburgh Artists may include relocated artists, either those who are no longer living in Pittsburgh, or people who have moved here from somewhere else. Artwork of by posthumous artists may also be submitted. Please NOTE this is a juried show. There is no guarantee that one or all of your works will be accepted, though emerging as well as established artists are encouraged to enter!

The deadline for this exhibition is Saturday September 17th at 5 pm. The gallery will be accepting proposals and artwork from 2 – 5 pm. Open Call For Submissions For Juried Show, "Women In Art" @ Seton Hill University

Obviously, this is an open call to women artists only.

"Harlan Gallery at Seton Hill University is currently seeking submissions for the juried exhibit “Women in Art” to be held October 27-November 21. “Women in Art” will showcase women artists working in all media."

All submissions must be made by Friday, September 16, and a $20 entry fee must accompany the submissions.

Open Call: Westmoreland Museum Looking For Photos Of Tattoos

No, all these pictures will not be displayed in the gallery-but it's still a great opportunity to display this honest personal and often deeply creative artform.

In September, the Westmoreland Museum of American Art will host the exhibition Tattoo Witness of tattoo photographs by Pittsburgh artist Mark Perrott. We would like also like to show pictures of your tattoos in a special section of the exhibition.

Quick Fleeting Pages Pop Up Bookstore Update: Opening May 7, Still Accepting Submissions

OK this is a very half assed update--mostly telling you to look at the website and follow things if are not. The opening was pushed back by a week and as you can see lots of small presses and independent authors, comic artists and zine makers are on board.Look, spread the word and get your stuff together ASAP if you want to be involved. 24 Thousand Square Feet of space in one of Pittsburgh's most central shopping districts--open to almost any kind of book related product or event you can dream up!

Fleeting Pages can finally announce the location: The former Borders in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Both floors of the space. All 24,000 sqft of it. And lucky for us, Borders left behind a considerable number of bookshelves and other useful materials.

The process to submit work is a relatively simple one:

•Contact us with who you are & what you would like to add to our inventory.
•Add answers / details to the items listed below in your email.
•After that, you will hear back from us with answers to your questions and possibly asking some of our own.
•Then we will coordinate getting your work here.
Unfortunately, we will only be able to accept items on consignment. We know that this is not ideal and we wish the situation were otherwise. But Fleeting Pages is going to cost a fortune (for us, anyway) in rent and utilities. Not to mention everything else needed to fill the space and make it function. Our current budget just doesn’t have any room to pre-order. Hopefully that will change as we progress. Even if it doesn’t, we have plans for things like raffles, mixed bag books for sale, and an online store aspect in the works to make sure that as few books as possible will be returned. Another option is to send a couple copies and be open to re-ordering if needed.

Payment- Our intention is to send payments for books sold at the end of the first two weeks, and again at the beginning of June. All will be paid by June 15th. (well, if we exercise our two week extension, it will be June 30th) Should we need to order more copies, we will send a payment for those they are replacing.

Display- Fleeting Pages is not like a traditional fair – tables of presses with representatives manning them. We will be using bookshelves and tables as a bookstore would. Hopefully with some new ideas of what that could mean mixed in. If a representative is able to come out (which would be so great!), we’d rather have them running a workshop (or taking one), hosting an event, or helping out in the space than behind a table.

I always fear that a few people from out of town might assume this blog covers everything there is to see or know about the Pittsburgh art scene. LOL, it would be pretty sad if it did.

IMHO, the best single source to follow for local openings, calls for artists and grant opportunities is The Pittsburgh Art Blog, the product of one insanely dedicated local artist who puts up several posts a day.He can't likely do more on his own. Coverage of the major museums is light. Rick tries to put the focus on local artists.

A few weeks ago I was contacted for help in finding Pittsburgh area artists who would be willing and able to donate their services to help 9 year old Zachary Mulvey achieve a higher quality of life. Jamie's Dream Team is run by 23 year old Jamie Holmes and they are looking for area artists who can paint murals on his bedroom walls of interest to Zachary like Star Wars and the Legend of Zelda. I hope anyone reading this will forward this along, post on blogs not only to get the attention of area artists but also to anyone willing to donate to this amazing cause (Jamie's Dream Team is a registered 501 c 3 non-profit).

Dear Mr. Byerly:

My name is Jamie Holmes, I am twenty-three (23) years old, and I am the founder of Jamie’s Dream Team. I am writing as a follow-up to the telephone conversation that you had on August 3, 2010 with my Mother, Kim Shidel, who is the First Vice-President of Jamie’s Dream Team. Jamie’s Dream Team is a nonprofit corporation that has been granted a 501(c)(3) designation from the Internal Revenue Service. A copy of the 501(c)(3) determination letter from the Internal Revenue Service for Jamie’s Dream Team is enclosed. The mission of Jamie’s Dream Team is to lift the spirits of those suffering from, and ease the burden caused by serious illness, injury, disability or trauma by granting assistance and/or “dreams” to those individuals. Jamie’s Dream Team’s purpose as a public charity is to provide assistance and/or make distributions to or on behalf of qualifying individuals who are handicapped, disabled, terminally ill, severely injured or suffering from a serious medical condition, disease or trauma. I was born with a rare disorder known as V.A.T.E.R. Syndrome. Children born with V.A.T.E.R. Syndrome can have congenital abnormalities of the vertebrae, anus, trachea, esophagus and kidneys. I was born with abnormalities in all of those areas. I have had at least twenty-five (25) surgeries and/or medical procedures since my birth, including surgeries to reconstruct my esophagus, trachea, and anus, and to fuse several vertebrae in my spine. One (1) of my kidneys disintegrated and my remaining kidney does not fully function. I, however, have been fortunate throughout my numerous hospitalizations and surgeries to have had the support and love of my family, friends, doctors and nurses. Throughout my life so far I have received so much from so many, and I have dreamed for several years of being able to help others in need. Despite the pain and suffering that I have, and will continue to endure, my heart has always been with others who are suffering. As such, I started Jamie’s Dream Team to fulfill my dream of helping others who are suffering as I have suffered at times throughout my life.

Jamie’s Dream Team has fulfilled over one hundred (100) “dreams” since its inception in November 2005. These “dreams” have been granted to qualifying children and adults and have included princess parties, carnivals, helicopter rides, airplane rides, golf outings, baseball games, motorized scooters, go-carts, computers, furniture, horse and carriage rides, amusement and water park outings, camping trips, NASCAR racing, concerts, Christmas presents and meet and greets.

I am presently working on fulfilling a “dream” for a boy who has truly touched my heart in every way possible. He is Zachary Mulvey. Zachary is only nine (9) years old and he has already received two (2) heart transplants. He received the first at the age of ten (10) months, and he received the second most recently on June 19, 2010 in Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Zachary’s need for the first transplant at the age of ten (10) months was due to dialated cardiomyopathy. He recovered from that transplant very well and was on his way to living a normal life when he was diagnosed with post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) approximately two (2) years ago. It is my understanding that PTLD is a form of cancer that transplant patients can get and the treatment for PTLD includes the cessation of the anti-rejection medications. As a result of the PTLD, Zachary could no longer take his anti-rejection medications for his heart transplant. On May 10, 2010, Zachary went into cardiac arrest while he was getting ready for school. CPR was performed on Zachary for anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes. As a last resort, Zachary was placed on an ECMO machine which is similar to a heart-lung machine. The following day Zachary’s Mother, Crystal Mulvey, was told that Zachary was not expected to have any brain function. As Zachary’s family was preparing for the worst, a miracle truly happened. Zachary woke up and was responsive to his medical team! Zachary was then placed on a ventricular assist device (VAD), which is like an artificial heart, while he waited for a new heart. Five (5) weeks later on June 19, 2010, a heart became available for Zachary. Zachary was discharged from Children’s Hospital with his transplanted heart on July 7, 2010. Zachary is doing well but he still cannot take the anti-rejection medications due to the PTLD. As such, Crystal Mulvey has informed me that a day will come when Zachary’s body will likely reject his new heart and she is fearful that Zachary will not be as lucky the next time.

Unlike other little boys his age, Zachary is unable to play sports, ride a bike or travel. As a result, Zachary has occupied his time and entertained himself by playing video games. He is truly a video game aficionado! His favorite video games include the various Legend of Zelda games. The “dream” that I am working on for Zachary includes a makeover for his bedroom. I would like to include as part of the makeover, a painted mural of video game characters on Zachary’s bedroom walls. I am writing to inquire whether you, or any other artists that you know, would be willing to donate your services to paint such a mural for Zachary.

Like me, Zachary has a dream to help others like himself who are suffering from a serious medical condition. The Community Coed Softball League (CCSC) in the Port Vue/Liberty Borough area has been fundraising for Zachary. On August 8, 2010, at the conclusion of its season, CCSC will be presenting a check to Zachary for the proceeds from its fundraising. Zachary, however, intends to, in turn, donate those proceeds to Jamie’s Dream Team to be used to help those who are sick like him. Zachary is truly an amazing and inspirational child! Art All Night is a grassroots event staged by an all-volunteer crew. A joyful celebration of the arts and community, the show grows in popularity each year, bringing thousands of people from all over the region into Lawrenceville. In 2009 Art All Night Lawrenceville featured work by 1034 artists and was attended by over 10,000 guests.

CMoA and TRAF

A couple of things have come through my inbox over the last week or so that I wanted to share. TRAF is reviving its juried exhibit and CMoA has a free admission program this month. So, two do not miss opportunities for artists. All you painters out there, let's bombard the festival with some smashing good work!

New Juried Visual Art Exhibition - Three Rivers Arts Festival
Back by popular demand, this juried exhibition will showcase the Pittsburgh region's vibrant creative community. The exhibition will take place at an indoor Cultural District gallery during the 2010 Three Rivers Arts Festival, June 4-13, in downtown Pittsburgh.

Submissions are welcome from across the spectrum of visual arts. Works will be juried by a panel of Pittsburgh-based artists and curators.

Artists who meet residence requirements may enter up to three qualifying individual pieces for jury. The goal of the New Juried Arts Exhibition is to showcase the best art produced in the Pittsburgh region. Decisions will be based solely on aesthetic quality as determined by the jury panel in an anonymous jury process.

Three Rivers Arts Festival Poster Contest: Deadline March 17TH

•The winning artwork will creatively represent Three Rivers Arts Festival's mission to connect the community to the arts.

•Artwork must measure 11 inches wide by 14 inches tall.

•Artwork must prominently incorporate the Three Rivers Arts Festival logo. The logo can be recreated or stylized to match your artwork but must be recognizable and prominent. Click here to download the Festival logo.

•Do not include the Festival dates, locations, website, or phone number in the artwork. This information will be added by the Festival outside the dimensions of the artwork.

Call For Artists : Irma Freeman Center For Imagination Grand Opening Exhibit

No doubt, you may have noticed the mirror mosaic covered storefront in Garfield. It's a new art and community center! And it opens with an open call show of Salvage art.

This is sort of a heads up since if you live in the Pittsburgh area, you will be able to drop off your work on October 3rd 11-3pm.

Best in show will be awarded.

Please submit your work to the front or back alley of the Irma Freeman Center for Imagination, 5006 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15224. Mail-ins should have a deadline postmark of September 21st. Drop off date is October 3rd from 11 am – 3 pm. All work must be ready to hang or be free standing. Every type of media will be considered. For more information call 412-418-6208. Artist shared studio space available in the Strip District

This is an interesting proposition. A building owner in the Strip District is turning a first floor flex space over to a group of artists. The space is in the Guardian Storage building on Liberty Ave @ 28th Street, which is a great location.

Richard Wierzbowski is leading the effort. At this point, nothing is cut in stone, although some things came out of the first meeting that make sense. The artists at the first meeting voiced concerns about the need for stationary storage. Other issues that were brought up made it clear that the space would be best for related disciplines.

Richard is very open to input from artists that might want to be involved in the space, to the degree that he has held one meeting and plans to hold another to learn about needs and concerns that would make this a successful venture. The next meeting is --

Artists' studio and exhibition space for those working on paintings, mixed media , fiber, collages or sculptures of an intermediate scale. Commercial photography is not suited to this space because of space constraints. We will be in the space on August 1, 2009.

The fourth wall is done in silver toned industrial metal. 12 feet high ceilings and free off street lighted parking with onsite security. Wooden floor and a new slate gray tiled bathroom with new fixtures. 2200 square foot with heat and air conditioning, exterior and interior lighting, electrical outlets, and a ventilation system for $50 per month, (utilities included in the rental fee) $100 security deposit with a 1 year lease. This offering is limited to 30 people. Indoor loading dock, ground floor space, great light and 24 hour security card access.

First Annual Art What You Got

Remember the Art What You Got festival last year? It was a blast, even with the rain and wind. Well, this year, Art What You Got is having its Frist Annual on July 19th! The applications for this year's Art What You Got are now available! This year, we will be accepting applications from performers, too. Art What You Got is Polish Hill’s art festival, the second summer street fair in this small neighborhood. The main intersection of Polish Hill, Brereton and Dobson streets, is closed for an entire weekend each July when the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church holds a church community festival. The church event is on Saturday only, but tents, tables, chairs and lighting would stay in place until Monday morning. The Polish Hill Civic Association saw an opportunity to create a new tradition for the neighborhood and utilize the second day of the street closing. With the assistance and cooperation of the church, the West Penn Recreation Center, and a squad of volunteers, the PHCA presented the first Art What You Got in July of 2008. Despite a fierce storm that blew through in the afternoon, the bands kept playing, people kept eating pierogis and kielbasa, the sun eventually came out again, and the festival was counted as a rousing success.

SketchCrawl

So, I think this is a pretty nifty idea. From the SketchCrawl site --

The next step was making the SketchCrawl a World Wide event: having people from different corners of the world join in a day of sketching and journaling and then, thanks to the Internet, having everyone share the results on an online forum.

The events happen in a (casual) quarterly schedule. The next one, SketchCrawl 22, is scheduled for April 22.

I wish I could do something about coordinating one of these events here in Pittsburgh. Unfortunately, I work on Saturdays at my day job and Saturdays off is not really an option. I hope someone around here takes this up; the event is up to 90 participating cities around the world. Who knew there were so many folks interested in drawing?

Three Rivers Arts Festival to return

Not bigger than ever, but maybe better. Could be.

This year's festival has been shortened from its seventeen day run to ten days. The festival will have all of the same components that previous festivals have had. Including the rain! Yep, TRAF is scheduled to begin on June 5. Historically, this area experiences quite a bit of rainfall at that time of year. With the weather that we're experiencing now, I'm wondering if we'll see snow...

The Artists Market, performances and children's area are all on the docket. The visual arts will return too, although there are no details available on the website that explain what form it will take. Last year's container exhibits had some problems. Actually, there have been several problems facing this component over the last several years, foremost being where to install the exhibit.

This seems like an elegant solution to the problems that have plagued TRAF in recent years. I think it might actually be for the best.

TRAF anticipates the return of gallery row and the emerging artists program to the Artists Market. I am not too sure about gallry row. The participation and interest of local galleries in this program has waned. However, the emerging artists program seems like a keeper. This program is not limited toyong artists but rather to artists new to TRAF that have never exhibited with the festival. I think that this program is a great way of introducing newcomers to the festival scene as well as bringing individual artists to the festival who otherwise might not have considered showing in this format.

moxbox's new program, Ask A

This sounds like it will be a very worthwhile venture. Boxheart and moxie daDa Galleries have been teaming up for a lot of events and programs over the last couple years. Both will be well represented at the Ask A DJ event by Nicole Capozzi and Christine Whispell. Following is their description of the event --

moxbox Premier Art Consulting presents: Portfolio Review, series 1The “ASK A” Series will provide emerging artists with the opportunity to ask questions and present their work to the moxbox panel of consultants. The panel consists of: Christine Whispell, owner of moxie DaDA gallery and consultant with Mox Box Premiere Art Consulting (PAC); Nicole Capozzi, owner of BoxHeart Gallery and consultant with Mox Box PAC; Kyle Ethan Fischer, owner of Kyle Ethan Fischer Studio and consultant with Mox Box PAC; and Grant Bobitski, curator of moxie DaDA gallery and consultant with Mox Box PAC. Consultations and recommendations with Matthew Indovina, special marketing strategist with moxie DaDA and moxBox PAC, and Joshua Hogan, framing specialist with BoxHeart gallery and consultant with moxBox PAC, will also be available.

Panel contributors and consultants will offer educated critiques as well as provide information to artists about current opportunities within the art market. The panel will select at least one artist from the portfolio review to showcase his/her work in the final “ASK A DJ” event. This will provide the artist(s) with the opportunity to follow a project through to exhibition, giving the artist(s) the experience of presenting, preparing, producing, marketing and exhibiting artwork.

The “ASK A DJ” event promotes diverse lifestyles and encourages creative living through an event which provides artists with a unique opportunity for showcasing, selling and promoting artwork which is site and event specific in an alternative venue.

Artist’s are welcome to bring portfolio binders and artwork on CD (one laptop will be available for viewing). If you are bringing actual pieces for review, there is a limit of 3. THANK YOU.

Artists Review Artists Project @Thinking About Art

JT Kirkland is always thinking. This time he is thinking about what constitutes a review in the current dialog about art and artists. From his new project --

... I am no longer sure what an art "review" is today. Is it a re-hashing of the gallery's press release? Is it a description of artwork in a show? Is it a blog post of images? Is it a thorough critical analysis of the exhibition, work and artist? Is it something else entirely?

JT Kirkland has conducted similar online projects in the past. His Artists Interview Artists project was at times very thought-provoking. This current project promises to be the same.

The impetus for the project is the lack of dialog in the traditional press for all of the arts. Currently, it is more likely for a paper to review a television show than it is for them to publish a review of an art exhibit or a new dance presentation. While I understand and agree with this premise, it also seems to me that this project could serve as arallying point for artists to have a direct and significant impact on the art dialog, which has for decades been the provenance of critics and historians. What The Carnegie International Could Have Been Part 2

Well, I found this little idea on the T&A Blog (must geta lot of hits-- Fellas, it's Technology and The Arts)A small town in Florida is taking what is now known as "projection bombing" to a new level with an open call festival.

"“Digital Graffiti” at Alys Beach is a festival created to celebrate and promote the world’s most talented and innovative digital artists - with the entire town literally serving as their canvas.

Sometimes referred to as “Photon Bombing,” “Guerilla Projection,” “Projection Bombing” or “Urban Projection,” artists use the latest technologies to project their unique works onto the white walls of Alys Beach, Florida - a stunning new resort town on the Gulf of Mexico. Alys Beach is located on Scenic Highway 30A, between Destin and Panama City Beach in Florida’s panhandle, along what The New York Times said “may be the best beach in the continental U.S.”

Artists are encouraged to submit works of digital art for consideration before 5:00pm EST on July 11, 2008. Works may include abstract VJ sets, digital imagery, short graphically-themed films, photography, animations or innovative new interactive concepts. Many category prizes will be awarded, including a $2,500 “Best of Show” grand prize, as judged by a panel of artistic and industry experts.
