Joshua Hogan Innocence and Arrogance

Do you think that verbalizing about visual arts is applicable in every instance and for every artist? I don't, and I think Joshua Hogan's work is a good example of when speculating on philosophical content falls short.

These are paintings about life, in an experiential interaction that inserts itself sideways into your mind. Do you know what I mean? His paintings reflect the fullness of life, without a narrative and with a diversity of points of view. Mr. Hogan's work leaves narrative in favor of a fullness of exploration.

With all of that said, I reacted strongly to Innocence and Arrogance (above). It's quite striking, for all that the palette has been limited. At first sight, from a distance where your vision encompasses the entire work, there is a sense of pattern and rhythm. Close inspection brings a different reward, with a rich surface texture. While the saturated dashes of color play across the canvases rhythms in a sweet counterpoint from a distance, they become a main player at closer scrutiny with subtle marks and detailed line.

I know I've focused a lot on this one work. The entire show is of the same quality,and is well worth giving yourself some time to really see the exhibit in its entirety. You can view installation images, or Mr. Hogan's portfolio, for a full scope of the exhibit.

Charles Caldemeyer: Structures

Box Heart is hosting a brunch event this Sunday for artist Charles Caldemeyer. It might be worth your while to take an opportunity to drop by and discuss this work with the artist. From Box Heart's site:

Caldemeyer's exhibition, "Structures," has grown out of his interest in the power of imagery to state a personal inner reality in public terms, and to summarize different levels of experience with a pictorial symbolic language. Each painting is arranged in four horizontal panels oriented in opposite directions around a central axis to suggest different levels of cognition and a sense of history and/or archaeology. The inhabitants of the "structures" are quotations from history and art history, as well as Caldemeyer's own invented figures. Read more

I hate to just leave it at this; the exhibit deserves greater scrutiny than what I am offering here. I am interested in seeing this show, and will be making my way to the gallery sometime over the next couple days. The work is highly detailed, and beautifully produced. I am most interested in the blend of materials since it sounds like a challenging mix.

Gary Duehr

Mr. Duehr makes it easy for the viewer to slip into narrative with this collection. That could be anybody, walking down the street on their way, coming back, or out for a stroll. The variety of narrative is in the gestural attitude; pensive, purposeful, hesitant, cowed. Because the viewpoint is from above, there is a sense of remote observation, and the narrative idles in a fleeting moment.

These are beautiful works. Subtle textures play in the grounds, and the central figures are blurred, creating a sense of collective experience. The color aesthetic is consistent, with saturated pigments played against pale grounds. In most of the collection, the figure is isolated in the field and contexts for space have very few indicators.

24 Hours in the Subway @Box Heart

I had the opportunity to meet Ms. Garbani at Box Heart during the artist reception for her solo, 24 Hours in the Subway. We had a few moments to discuss what we like best about working with pastels.

Her group of subway inspired works are really beautiful, offering a recording of a moment's contemplation pulled from the hectic energy of daily commuting. The works are elegantly simple in their softness and abbreviated palette. The strong contrast between decaying sooty darks, and the shallow yellow of fluorescent light emphasize the rhythm of the cars as well as the structure of the subway environment.

For all of their elegance, the works impart a sense of isolation. There are no people, and the only indication of human intrusion is the occasional suggestion of scrawled graffiti.

I did notice that Ms. Garbani chose a very substantial paper, with deckling intact, for the subway series. The square format is a difficult one to work with, and Ms. Garbani answers this challenge with aplomb.

Sarah Wiseman @Box Heart

Sarah Wiseman: Crawl Inside . Thread, Ink (monotype) Acrylic, Pencil, and Screen print

It's a little late notice, Contemplations on State of Being closes tomorrow (July 16). The only saving factor is that Box Heart will retain works from the exhibit, so if you can't make it in for the solo presentation of Ms. Wiseman's work, you can be assured of seeing them at the gallery.

But that's the great thing about blogging. I didn't get in to see the exhibit until yesterday, but I can still post it up, quick as can be! I am so glad that I did take a moment to view the exhibit.

The works were created on substantial paper substrate, using an impressive range of media, to create richly textured surfaces. The application of thread creates a delicate veil, a final layer over an intricately worked surface. Ms. Wiseman brings considerable thought to her mark making, with considerable restraint and focus. If there are accidents here, they have been carefully integrated into the final works.

The small scale of the works invites intimate examination, and really, it http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifis only on this close examination that the viewer can really appreciate the subtle interplays of the materials. Sarah Wiseman's work requires that close examination, letting it soak through you as you submerge through the layers.

Box Heart: 11th Anniversary

Sonja Sweterlitsch

Box Heart has mounted its annual Anniversary Exhibit, showcasing new works by gallery artists. The show is carefully curated, with an eye for contemporary expressions and fine work.

Box Heart represents a very diverse group of artists, whose practices span formal painting through visionary assemblage. Sonja Sweterlitsch (see above) demonstrates fine control in her portraits; the gallery has severl samples of her work. Tate Hudson's work (see below) was particularly compelling. The surface is rich in layered texture, images and mark shifting across the long format.

There are some beautiful and compelling works on display. Box Heart, luckily, documents their exhibits very well and has mounted a slideshow that gives a great tour of the gallery. Congratulations to Box Heart on bringing eleven years of their extraordinary vision to the Pittsburgh community.

Deanna Mance @Box Heart

Deanna Mance brings discipline to her works on paper, creating intricate, large-scale abstract 'scapes. More than anything, the works are reminiscent of maps, cataloging more than streets and implying the sense of activity that one finds in a busy city. In her recent show at Box Heart, The Dead Engineer, Mance exhibits works that span the last seven years. This body of work reflects a dedication to her medium, remaining a consistent presentation. From Box Heart's release:

As Mance looked back over those seven years, she acknowledged the transformation her artwork made in things such as; scale, material, design, color, and overall composition. Although one can certainly acknowledge those differences, the works do share a common thread. They all strive to mimic the lay-outs of improbable objects or the mistranslation of an undiscovered language. Perhaps the location of a secret hiding place or intelligence gathered from deep within the mind. Not a real engineer, Mance perceives her art as blueprints of objects that could never manifest within known physical reality.

It is a dichotomy, to say that a work can be precise as well as intuitive, but the works have that kind of feel to them. Like a jam session, where the musician knows his instrument and its range so well that he can impart incredible impact to his riffs, only Mance is doing it on paper.

The Dead Engineer is on exhibit through March 26 at Box Heart.

Joren Dykstra @ Box Heart

From Box Heart's site:
"Joren Dykstra's current work centers around two series of paintings: "Grid" paintings, in which the picture plane is divided into multiple squares, and "Synthetic Collage" paintings, which are random in their overall composition."

The works Mr. Dykstra is presenting are very energetic, destroying the static designation of "grid". The line and color fairly explode from the canvases. The grid makes cursory appearances in these works, disappearing and re-surfacing in broken lines. The motifs that Mr. Dykstra uses are consistent in size, lending themselves to a kind of calligraphy that begs to be read.

Mr. Dykstra's recent works are available for viewing at Box Heart Gallery through August 14. Kudos to the gallery for putting up a strong solo in a month usually dedicated to group exhibits.

Art Inter/National @Boxheart

I took a break from studio work today and wandered up Liberty Avenue to see Boxheart's Art Inter/National today. Lovely day for it. It's great to have such an amazing venue so close to my workspace.

The Art Inter/National is an annual exhibit at Boxheart. From their show statement --

The Art Inter/National Exhibition began in January 2002 with the concept of exploring space, how the immediate environment impacts the artistic process and influences what each artist creates. Inspired by the prestigious Carnegie International, Box Heart Gallery is thrilled to offer the Pittsburgh community an intimate, yearly alternative. Over 275 entries, from regional, national, and international artists, were received this year. Of these entries, 20 artists were selected for participation and 29 works of art in a variety of media will be exhibited.

A variety of media indeed! On exhibit are some very fine works ranging from sculpture to painting.


Watercolor on Paper: Brian Shaughnessy

There is something very compelling about Shaughnessy's works. They are a little on the violent side, but that wasn't why I was drawn to theem. Rather, it was the richness of the work. For all that these are watercolors, there was a real density to the images. Very difficult to achieve with watercolors.


Encaustic: Ariela Steif

I'm a sucker for encaustics. The images above don't really do justice to the works on display at the gallery. As with any encaustic, there is considerably more depth to the works. These have a very interesting surface character, too. The imagery implies violence as it depicts strands of barbed wire.


Mixed Media : Jane Notides-Benzing

This was a sweet little work. There is an airiness to it, no doubt. The colors catch and toss your eye all the way around the work. A very energetic work with a lot of implied movement to it.

As always, a very fine show. Please stop by and find your own favorite among the works.

Arabella Proffer @Box Heart Gallery

Splendor and Safety Pins is a charming exhibit. The works are very sweet, small portraits of imaginary luminaries. The first thing thought of when I walked in the gallery was steampunk. from the artist statement --

Channeling costume history of the Renaissance through the Georgian period, each highly detailed painting is Proffer's depiction of old world aristocratic decadence; these mannerist gothic and punk portraits of imaginary nobility explore the roles that beauty, vanity, entitlement and virtue play in shaping aesthetic outcomes. Concerned with identity, first impressions, and the ideas and representations of counter-culture and tradition, each piece explores how piercing, tattoos, and punk rock style might have been adopted by aristocrats and social elites as part of their decoration for serious portraits to be left as a reminder of their legacy.

The paintings' descriptions were captivating, with a short biography of the individuals pictured. The exhibit is up through October 10.

Zombo gallery (4900 Hatfield St.) upholds its status as the most active art space in the city with its reception for Catfish & Such (7-11PM). TJ Reddick likes animals and bright colors. See what I mean?

It's not too late to buy a $50 ticket to the Unicorn Mountain Fundraiser @ Remedy. The event is called The Esoteric Order of the Illustrious Owl Bear, and includes live entertainment, a Bavarian dinner served family-style, an art auction, the new issue of UM (called Black Forest, to be released later this month), and a T-shirt advertising Pittsburgh's hippest art collective. For $35 you can attend the dinner without the material goodies, and for a mere $5 you can participate in the dance party. For details, check out the link.

Future Tenant (819 Penn Avenue, downtown) features a show curated by Jeff Schreckengost and Lisa Toboz called 'Dividing the Goose". The title apparently refers to the themes of folklore and fairy tales that underpin this multimedia exhibition.

Saturday

Cleveland-based Arabella Proffer is unleashing "Splendor and Safety Pins", which highlights her "faux portrait paintings" at Boxheart (4523 Liberty Avenue, Bloomfield) from 6-9PM. She creates mythical European countries and populates them with the characters she envisions. Her work is flat, cartoon-like, and vibrantly colored... and thus perfectly appealing to my aesthetic sensibilities. I believe I'll make a point of attending this one.

When was the last time you made it over to Braddock? See what Fetterman and Co. have been up to by attending the Obscurae Art Lottery over at UnSmoke Systems (1137 Braddock Avenue). For $45 ($55 at the door) you can buy a ticket to purchase a fine art photograph documenting the community. Depending upon when that ticket is drawn, you may get to select your favorite piece, from first to last. It is free to attend this event, but they are trying to raise money to revitalize their neighborhood, so donations are accepted. Eat some fresh bread cooked nearby while you are at it.

Imagebox (4933 Penn Avenue) is opening their doors for "The Red Tag Studio Sale" to benefit the Persad Center. It's rare to see the gallery welcome guests on a day other than First Friday, so it's probably worth a stop (6PM) to see the work of local and national artists.

Sacred Art @Box Heart

The Sacred Art exhibit at Box Heart is always a good show. This annual juried exhibit has reached it's thirteenth year. The exhibit is up and the opening reception is this Saturday. There were several really fine works up yesterday when I swung by. The show is just recently installed and the Box Heart team has not had a chance to upload documentation on the exhibit yet. This exhibit is national in scope and features work from all over the country as well as some local artists.


Jessica Somers Consumption

There is something really appealing about the simplicity of the above work by Ms. Somers. I think the title belies the image somewhat. The wolves seem more comforting, like a mass of warm bodies acting as protection. Well, that's my individual reaction, though.

The above works by Ms. Rudorff-Smith are small canvases, well-painted. Both have a lovely soft glow. They seem like a memory of anticipation. The table was in the process of being set. The presentation was seriously considered, with an eye for tablecloth and place setting. The host and guest know each other well enough to share a simple, intimate repast. Since this exhibit is about interpretations of the sacred, it seens to me that the artist feels a very day-to-day relationship with the spiritual.

9th Annual Anniversary Exhibition @Boxheart

Well, timing is everything. I saw the Boxheart exhibit about two weeks ago. I didn't post about it last week because I wanted to talk about Three Rivers Arts Festival and I thought this show would be longer. My bad! In looking at Boxheart's site, I realized that this show is ending on Saturday.

Boxheart's Anniversary show is a great way to get to know the gallery's artists. The range in the exhibit is wide but they have one thing in common; they are excellent. Boxheart doesn't carry something for everyone, even with the range that is exhibited. You won't find Pennsylvania landscapes. Rather, you'll find contemporary, formal works next to expressionistic outsider works. That's a helluva range when viewed together.

Legacy: Kim Curinga @Box Heart

Erased 20" X 24", Digital Collage on Canvas

Kim Curinga's Legacy exhibit at Box Heart should go on your list of exhibits to see in May. I've seen Ms. Curinga's work before; this time, she is printing her large-scale digital works on canvas. On canvas, the works are even richer than on paper. The deeps appear deeper and there is a surprising amount of subtle undertones to the color.

I am partial to the figures in Legacy. From Box Heart's description --

... Curinga's work is a journey. It tells a story, has a history. It has to come from a personal place for her to create a piece. It will always be changing. It has to for her to keep creating. It may change from week to week. After a series is finished in her head, she is ready to move on. Curinga will stay on a series until she is tired of it, only to switch to another as her mood changes. But all series and styles are ultimately ongoing. Read more here

Yes, there is a sense of narrative to the work. But overwhelming the narrative is some pretty strong emotional content. The works presented from Curnga's Nude series are raw, unabashed and stark. Erased, pictured above, is one of the strongest from this series, providing a vector for self examination that most women might find uncomfortable to travel.

Kyle Ethan Fischer @ Box Heart

Kyle Ethan Fischer, Get Rhythm, 24" X 24" X 3", Mixed Media on Wood

One really good reason for following Kyle Ethan Fischer's work: it evolves. I will say that I was surprised when I walked in the gallery to see that Mr. Fischer had moved his work even further to the non-narrative. His work has always had some references to the figurative. It was a good surprise.

The works on display include paintings and works on paper. The paintings are highly textured, in some cases embellished with gold leaf. The works seem to explore multiple techniques without becoming muddied. There is a decided focus to the works, even while they maintain their painterly, loose qualities.

The works that Brenda Stumpf has created in this new series are lovely. (Click on the above image for a slightly larger version) The works that I found most striking were the ink drawings. Several of her sculptures are on display in this exhibit. But the drawings are what I found resonated for me. They are very meticulous but still have a sense of intuition about them.

Works from an earlier series are on display also. These works are substantially different from the current drawings, although there is a more apparent connection to the sculptures.

The exhibit is already in place, with the artist's reception on Saturday. Stop in; well worth the trip.

Sacred Art @BoxHeart

Sherry Rusinack - Keeper of Sacred Things

This is the thirteenth edition of the Sacred Art exhibit at BoxHeart Gallery. As in shows in the past, it represents a range of expressions not only in medium but also in interpretation. The gallery's statement for the exhibit is admirable --

The Sacred Art Exhibition is an Annual Event in the Bloomfield Community. The arts enable contact with The Sacred on an intimate level. By creating, The Sacred is manifested by the hands and a new life is brought into existence. Selection for this exhibition requires that artists submit pieces that explore their personal interpretation of The Sacred. All interpretations, both traditional and nontraditional, are considered. This exhibition does not recognize any difference of authority between the traditions of the God-knowing and the artistic cultures that surround them.

This year, I was particularly struck by the starkness of several of the works. It is almost a reflection on how spirituality has ceased to be a comfort in this day and age. Not all of the works, really. But enough of them that I was left with a sense of mourning. It is, I think, a fitting statement for the times in which we find ourselves. Definitely a show the offers more questions than answers.

This sounds like it will be a very worthwhile venture. Boxheart and moxie daDa Galleries have been teaming up for a lot of events and programs over the last couple years. Both will be well represented at the Ask A DJ event by Nicole Capozzi and Christine Whispell. Following is their description of the event --

moxbox Premier Art Consulting presents: Portfolio Review, series 1The “ASK A” Series will provide emerging artists with the opportunity to ask questions and present their work to the moxbox panel of consultants. The panel consists of: Christine Whispell, owner of moxie DaDA gallery and consultant with Mox Box Premiere Art Consulting (PAC); Nicole Capozzi, owner of BoxHeart Gallery and consultant with Mox Box PAC; Kyle Ethan Fischer, owner of Kyle Ethan Fischer Studio and consultant with Mox Box PAC; and Grant Bobitski, curator of moxie DaDA gallery and consultant with Mox Box PAC. Consultations and recommendations with Matthew Indovina, special marketing strategist with moxie DaDA and moxBox PAC, and Joshua Hogan, framing specialist with BoxHeart gallery and consultant with moxBox PAC, will also be available.

Panel contributors and consultants will offer educated critiques as well as provide information to artists about current opportunities within the art market. The panel will select at least one artist from the portfolio review to showcase his/her work in the final “ASK A DJ” event. The “ASK A DJ” event promotes diverse lifestyles and encourages creative living through an event which provides artists with a unique opportunity for showcasing, selling and promoting artwork which is site and event specific in an alternative venue.

Artist’s are welcome to bring portfolio binders and artwork on CD (one laptop will be available for viewing). If you are bringing actual pieces for review, there is a limit of 3. THANK YOU.

And Remedy is one really cool venue, one among the few watering holes under new management here in da burgh.

Tracy Helgeson @BoxHeart

I got to Boxheart early enough last night that I had an unobstructed view of Tracy's work, at least for a few moments anyway. The solo exhibit of Tracy Helgeson's landscapes is a feast for the senses, with the warm-to-burning tones of these extraordinary paintings. If you are in the area, make a point of stopping in.

A gently reminder - Tracy's work is included in the Blogger Show at Agni and Digging Pitt Galleries.

Sacred Art reception @BoxHeart in Pittsburgh

The Sacred Art opening reception was wonderful. It is so nice to see new faces on the walls of the galleries here and since this is an international show, there were several opportunities. There was a nice range of expressions, but I do tend to favor the less traditional pieces, so that is what I concentrated on here. There were several iconogrphic and traditional works on display, so don't let my slanted view keep you from going and enjoying the exhibit.
